Sigismondo Matteo Melis
Nasce a Iglesias nel 1902 e fin da giovanissimo manifesta un temperamento vivace ed estroso.
Assai noto in città per la sua attività nell’arte plastica, studia a Faenza sotto la guida di grandi maestri della ceramica.
Allievo di prof. Gambello raggiunge un notevole eclettismo artistico.
Soggiorna a lungo a Roma, dove opera nell’arte pittorica e nel modellato per nobili famiglie romane e per edifici pubblici.
Grande antifascista viene confinato a Ponza con il senatore Terracini, uno dei fondatori della Repubblica Italiana.
Lavora a Cinecittà, dove realizza opere scenografiche per i grandi kolossal.
Al suo ritorno a Iglesias, dopo alcune difficoltà, viene presentato al dott. Renzo Pasci che gli dà l’incarico di insegnare l’arte della ceramica agli allievi del collegio ENAOLI:
Ha fatto parte del gruppo artistico SARDES e con loro ha partecipato a numerose esposizioni, mettendosi in luce insieme ad artisti di chiara fama come F. Daspro, G. Tilocca, C. Nivola e D. Fantini, che gli ha dedicato una stupenda caricatura.
